Signs and Symptoms of TMJ

TMJ Los Angeles

You might have heard someone mention that they have TMJ, but you went away wondering what it is. Your instincts may have also told you to ask Google, and you got your answer. However, if you have no clue about what it means, it’s always okay to ask or do some little bit of homework. The Wilshire Smile Studio could be the best place to start.

Temporomandibular Joints (TMJ) disorder is a condition that occurs when the joints and jaw muscles that connect to your jawbone do not function as they should. Such functions include chewing, opening and closing your mouth, swallowing, and speaking. If the joints do not work right, these functionalities are interrupted. You may quickly notice the condition spiking in when you feel pain in your jaw joint and also in the muscles which control the movement of your jaws. Before digging deeper into what it feels like to suffer from TMJ, here’s what Wilshire Smile Studio has for you:

What Causes TMJ Disorder?

Whereas the primary cause of TMJ is an underlying dysfunction of jaw joints and muscles, other causes result in more severe damage if not addressed.

They include:

  • Disc erosion
  • Grinding and clenching of teeth
  • Severe impact or injury on the jaw- the magnitude of trauma may damage the jaw tooth, joint or cause a misalignment of the jaw.
  • Arthritis, which in most cases, damages cartilages found in a joint.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ

Depending on the severity of your condition, you may experience pain on one side of your face or both. Whichever the case, what comes with this condition is not pleasant at all.

These signs and symptoms may include some of the following, if not all:

  • Painful and tender jaws and muscles
  • Stiffened jaw muscles
  • Difficulty in chewing
  • ”lockjaw’, which restricts the free movement of your jaws

In other cases, you may experience pain around your ears, on your face and neck.

Diagnosis of TMJ

Making a diagnosis for this condition poses to be a challenge since there are no standard tests to carry it out. Now, if medical experts and practitioners find difficulty in getting a diagnosis for it, TMJ Los Angeles signs and symptoms are not something that you should ignore. Struggle to establish the real cause doesn’t mean there’s no solution for the problem. An MRI, CT scan or XRAY would effectively show where the problem is before a health provider fixes you.

Treatment of TMJ

The pain you experience shouldn’t make you worry more than you should. In some cases, it goes away with little treatment, or none at all. Well, that’s if you’re lucky. In a case where the condition is chronic, several approaches may be employed to address it, all of which may include:

  • Orthodontic treatment to adjust your bite
  • Replacement of damaged crowns and bridges on your teeth to balance your bite.
  • A mouth guard- to control grinding and clenching of teeth.
  • Acupuncture treatments
  • Wilshire Smile Studio Physical therapy
  • TMJ-related surgeries

Despite TMJ being common, there are a lot of misunderstandings behind this condition and how it is treated. Before you settle for any treatment, it is crucial to know the risks that may be involved before going for any approach.
